A 180-acre state-run wildlife sanctuary and education center is located just off one of
the busiest portions of Route 1 in Portsmouth. There's a lot more to the Urban
Forestry Center than its trails. Information about its lectures and programs is
available at the main building. The center has set up a short "tree identification trail"
with markers identifying the different trees, and a two-mile trail through a woodland
and along the shore of the Sagamore Creek wetland.
From the north, take Rt. 1 south past the Comfort Inn to the
intersection with
Elwyn Road. Turn left. The entrance to the Urban
Forestry Center is about a quarter of a mile down Elwyn.
From the south, take Rt. 1 and watch for the Market Basket shopping center. Just beyond the
center, turn right next to the gas station.
